Pre-Thanksgiving Workouts To Prepare For The Holidays

The holidays are right around the corner! Even though the temperature has dropped and it’s not as appealing to go outside to get a workout in, it’s important to stay active and keep your body in tip top shape. The holidays are known for adding pounds on your body through food and stress. You can combat both with a consistent workout routine. Want to know more? Keep reading for additional information.

Did you know that Americans will purchase nearly 600 million pounds of candy for Halloween this year? That is the equivalent weight of six Titanic ships! Also, the average American will consume nearly 3,000 calories during Thanksgiving dinner. And let’s not even talk about the calories consumed in leftovers, other holiday dinners, and then even more leftovers! The only way you can prevent weight gain during this season is to work out consistently. By working out in the weeks leading up to the holidays, you boost your metabolism and create a calorie deficit. So the large calorie intake during the holidays won’t hurt you too much!

Know that cardio is your friend during these times. Holiday food is especially high in carbohydrates and starches. A quick run or a long walk will knock that out, no problem! So bump up the cardio before and after a big holiday meal.

Weight lifting is also important because when you weight lift in the morning, your body is actively burning calories all day long! You can also keep your metabolism active by eating breakfast every day, especially on holidays. This way you won’t arrive at your holiday festivities absolutely starving!

“‘Eat less and exercise more’ is the winning formula to prevent weight gain during the holidays,” says Connie Diekmen, Med, RD, former president of the American Dietetic Association. “Increase your steps or lengthen your fitness routine the weeks ahead and especially the day of the feast.”

A few things to remember as you go into the holidays: if you know you are going to binge eat a lot of candy or food one day, be sure to get some cardio in. Keep in mind – everything in moderation! Don’t get down on yourself because you splurged during the holidays. Letting yourself get down will only keep you from working out. And last but not least, if you are consistent, you have nothing to worry about! You will bounce back in no time.
